CONVERSION AND COMPLETION OF THE ŽIŽKOV FREIGHT STATION
The project combines sensitive conversion of industrial buildings with new construction. The aim is to transform the former freight station into a vibrant and multifunctional urban center.
Conversion of an industrial monument. The new city center of Žižkov.
The Žižkov freight station is one of the most important transformation projects of contemporary Prague. The functionalist complex was built in the 1930s and its operation ended in 2002. In 2013, it was declared a cultural monument. Today, it represents an exceptionally well-preserved industrial complex with a unique structure, architecture and historical operating scheme.
FROM INDUSTRIAL AREA TO A NEW CENTER
The City of Prague acquired the historic building and adjacent land in 2024. The conversion of the station is part of a broader transformation of a large brownfield site into a new city district. The area is to become its natural center of gravity and connect the existing Žižkov with the new city structure.
The aim is to transform the station into an open and multifunctional urban centre, where culture, education, healthcare, work, services, commerce and housing will be connected. The plan also includes a new school campus.
CONVERSION AND PUBLIC SPACE
The project combines sensitive conversion of historic buildings with new construction. The characteristic architecture and industrial identity of the area will be preserved, but the buildings will be given new and long-term adaptable use. A significant part of the public amenities will be the city library and polyclinic. The use of the front administrative building for the National Film Archive and the State Audiovisual Fund is also being prepared.
Opening the area to the city is key. The historic hall is to become a significant public space connecting the surrounding city with a new linear park. The characteristic historical structures, towers and bridges will also be preserved.
INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION
An international architectural competition will be announced in autumn 2026. Its conceptual part will seek the overall concept of the area and its integration into the new district, while the project part will provide specific solutions for the conversion of buildings, the reconstruction of the hall and the adjacent public spaces.
LONG-TERM INVESTMENT
The estimated costs for conversion and completion are CZK 5.227 billion. They include the conversion of historical buildings, the renovation of the hall, the school campus and the restoration of historical structures.
The Žižkov Freight Station is not just a reconstruction of an industrial monument. It is a project to transform a brownfield into a new city center, where history, culture, education, work, services and everyday life will be connected.
